An I.W. Harper mixology class with the guys

Back in June I hosted a dinner with a group of friends to learn more about I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It was a fantastic night with good food, friends and drink so when the opportunity for an I.W. Harper mixology class came along, I jumped at the chance.

Knowing I had some good friends who share a love of whiskey, I knew I had some eager recruits to include in this new I.W. Harper experience. Whiskey has made an incredible resurgence in Washington and one of the best places to enjoy a glass is at Jack Rose Dining Saloon. Naturally it was the perfect place for a mixology lesson featuring a carefully crafted American made whiskey and have an awesome guy’s night out.

Under the expert guidance of head bartender, Benny Hurwitz, the gang started the evening with sampling the I.W. Harper 15, an excellent sipping whiskey with notes of oak, raisin, caramel, spice, and vanilla. As excellent as the sipping was, it was a mixology class so Benny whipped up three fun and interesting cocktails each distinctive but all expertly crafted with I.W. Harper.

The Knit Blazer: Saturday’s casual look

I’ve always wondered how do you make a tailored look a little more relaxed. I have to admit; I’m one of those guys that feels comfortable in a tailored look. Give me a jacket and tie and I feel like I own the world. So when I came across a knit blazer, I knew this was a match made in heaven. It’s little more relaxed but still giving me the tailored look I love.

The knit blazer is something new for me. Last spring I had the opportunity to go to Austria and naturally one of the things I like to do while visiting new places is to shop. I like to see what guys are wearing in other parts of the world. One of the trends that caught my eye was the knit blazer. It seemed to be everywhere. I was immediately drawn to this Hugo Boos striped version and I had to pick it up.

Since I got it in spring it was really too hot to wear during the summer so I’d almost forgot I had it. I needed something to wear to run a few errands for an upcoming Cancun trip and then head to a couple of weekend events. I remembered the blazer and thought it would be perfect for my day. It is unlined and made of a jersey material that wears almost like a sweatshirt that made it extremely comfortable. Better yet, because it’s structured like a blazer I knew it would work for my later events.

I love the versatility of the blazer. II knew I wouldn’t have time to change so I needed something that would work all day. I paired my knit blazer with a tonal white dress shirt and flat front blue slacks. To keep the relax feel I added white sneakers.

A knit blazer is a great way to keep a tailored look in a much more informal way. You get the structure of a blazer in comfortable fabrics that are great for on the go and can also be travel ready (less wrinkling than a traditional blazer). Pair it with a dress shirt and tie and it can be dressed up. Worn with jeans it takes your casual look up a notch and is a great alternative to traditional fall jackets.

Dressing like a Washingtonian Stylesetter

Every year the Washingtonian Magazine puts out its annual Stylesetter list. The Stylesetter list is a celebration of the 10 best dressed in DC for the year. And while the annual list garners much talked about buzz, the party that fetes the awardees is a fashion extravaganza.

Knowing that I was attending this year’s festivities, I wanted to make sure I picked a look worthy of the night. I truly believe that Washington is coming into its own in style and fashion so I decided that everything that I wore should be available right here in our Nations Capitol. Why leave the city to find fashion when you can score some great finds right in town?

washingtonian-stylesetter-2 washingtonian-stylesetter-3

My other objective for what I wore was to stay true to my decision to wear pink during the month of October. I am a part of the Real Men Wear Pink campaign which goes to support breast cancer awareness. I could still use your support as I strive to raise funds that will go to terrific work being done by the American Cancer Society. If you’d like to contribute, here’s the link. Thank you for your generosity.

Once I picked out what I was going to wear, I needed an incredible backdrop to give it the right showcase. The good folks at Banks Development graciously allowed me to shoot my look for Stylesetters in its beautiful new home that will soon hit the market (More to come in an upcoming post.)

Gray is a great suit color and I chose mine with a marvelous plaid to it. It bucks the traditional black and navy suit colors that are easy go-tos for men. Paired with brown shoes, I think I scored the perfect look for the night. I may not be a Washingtonian #Stylesetter for 2016 but I’m well on my way. Cheers to the winners for this year.

Fall Fashion Looks 2016

Fall is one of my favorite times of year. Surprisingly I’m not a fan of colder weather but I do love fall fashion looks and the variety of choices that the season brings. This year there are a lot of fantastic options including sweaters, suiting and a variety of outerwear that will help you fight the chill and keep you looking great at the same time.

I have some fantastic pieces and some new fall fashion looks that I’m looking forward to wear. I picked up this Billy Reid vest at the end of last season. It harkens back to the Rat Pack days and has a definite hipster appeal. It’s in my heavy rotation business casual arsenal and it’s perfect for an awesome date night look.

Accessories are also going to be big this year. Consider a great hat in an interesting shade. Mine added a nice touch of color to my outfit. Finally, I completed my look with a great pair of lace up s from Timberland. Don’t just think of Timberland’s for work boots. They have some great casual clothes and some really fun shoe styles like the blue chukkas I featured in a previous post.

This season take chances with your fall fashion looks. It’s okay to step outside the box sometimes but remember trends come and go. Focus on comfort and classic styling. These are good elements that last a lifetime.

Real Men Wear Pink

I was asked to take part in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign here in Washington, DC. The campaign enlists men who are community leaders to wear pink during the month of October to raise awareness and funds to support the American Cancer Society’s fight to end breast cancer. Not only just held in Washington, DC but men are taking part in Real Men Wear Pink campaigns in cities all over the country.

Real Men Wear Pink 2 Real Men Wear Pink 3

I was honored to participate but then I thought about it. I am neither a community leader nor a hero in the community. I’m just a fashion blogger who happens to take half decent pictures and shares my opinion on DC Fashion. The real heroes are the women and men who have been diagnosed with the disease and are fighting and surviving. So it is for those brave individuals that I am doing my part to support and honor them.

Real Men Wear Pink 4

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2016 are:

  • About 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
  • About 61,000 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
  • About 40,450 women will die from breast cancer.

Real Men Wear Pink 5

I have two friends that are both cancer survivors. Before I agreed to participate in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign. I reached out to both of them. I wanted them to know that I was doing this in their honor. I have witnessed their personal strength and determination. Both are remarkable women and it is for them that I am participating in this campaign.

Real Men Wear Pink 1

Typically in my blog posts, I add links to shop my look and provide details of my outfit. This post will be different, Instead of fashion links, I ask you click my Real Men Wear Pink link and show your support to my two friends and all the others who have been touched by breast cancer. I can’t think of a better tribute to two beautiful individuals. They know who they are and they and I you for your support!

The St. Jude Heart of Fashion

September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month and I had the honor of serving as one of the co-chairs of the St. Jude Heart of Fashion. The annual fashion show is collaboration with St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital and Neiman Marcus. The show featured the hottest fall fashions of the season.

Heart of Fashion - pose

What I like about St. Jude is their mission which is to end childhood cancer. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because they believe all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Given the great work they do and combining it with a fashion show meant a great afternoon of beautiful fashion for a worthy cause.

There was an amazing team who put together the event so my job was a little less daunting. You can be a success if you surround yourself with talented people. What was more daunting was to find something to wear.  I chose a charcoal suit; it’s always one of my good go to looks and a great look for fall. With the right shirt/tie combinations a charcoal suit is very versatile and can look different all the time.

I had been dying to wear the goodies out of my August Sprezzabox. I was getting a fall vibe from the tie with its bold geometric pattern so I thought this would be great for the occasion. The team at Sprezzabox does a great job of coordinating accessories. I look forward to my monthly subscription boxes. The tie and pocket square were the ideal finishing touches to create my fall look.
