Sometimes it’s not the distance you travel, a staycation in your own backyard can be just as rewarding. Even if it’s just for a day or two, a little getaway or staycation can do wonders for rejuvenating your spirit. Recently, I had the opportunity to enjoy a few days in National Harbor courtesy of the AC Hotel.

I’ve been to National Harbor many times usually for an event. Most recently it was to see Bruno Mars at MGM National Harbor. I’ve enjoyed day festivals like Celebrez en Rose or the annual National Food and Wine Festival. While National Harbor has garnered a reputation of hosting a variety of fun outdoor events, these have typically been in and out excursions for me. I’ve never taken advantage of everything that this bustling community has to offer. As a result, the thought of experiencing a staycation at the National Harbor sounded like fun.

My day started out checking in to the AC Hotel. The AC Hotel at National Harbor was the third AC Hotels by Marriott to launch in the United States. It was the first in the Northeast. The eight-story hotel is located right in the center of town with walking access to many of the restaurants and activities that are not to be missed during your visit. My room had a minimalist design but felt very sleek and modern with a gorgeous view of the Potomac River and Capital Wheel.

Day Adventures

As the DCFashion Fool, I don’t miss the opportunity to pass up a shopping opportunity. We hopped on the National Harbor Circulator Bus and headed to Tanger Outlets. The Circulator’s stop is about two blocks away from the hotel and runs every 30 minutes. The outlet boasts more than 80 stores to get your shopping game on. While that’s a lot to choose from, I definitely have my favorites. I’m partial to Theory, Club Monaco, Vince, Hugo Boss and Polo. I may have snagged a few things that will show up in some upcoming fall looks. If you stay in town and want to shop don’t miss the Miguel Wilson Collection. The custom suiting shop creates spectacular suiting especially for special occasions and weddings. Although started in Atlanta, Wilson is from the DC area and has established a shop right here in the National Harbor.

One of the National Harbor’s main attractions is the Capital Wheel. This Ferris wheel opened in 2014 and has an overall height of 180 feet. The Capital Wheel provides amazing views of the DC metropolitan area from 42 climate-controlled passenger gondolas. There’s even a VIP gondola that can be rented for weddings or celebrations. Personally, personally Ferris wheels scare me. I prefer to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. Although I rode the wheel, I really enjoyed the Flight Deck Lounge & Bar and enjoyed a couple of cocktails.

Pro tip: For a truly magical staycation, hit the Flight Deck in the late afternoon/early evening. You’ll be treated to one of the best sunsets in the area.

Dining

From fast casual to formal dining, National Harbor has a variety of dining choices. For dinner, we hit the Walrus Oyster and Ale House. The Walrus serves an all-scratch menu, made with fresh seasonal ingredients for seafood lovers and landlubbers alike. Great choices are the onion rings, fish & chips and shrimp & grits. Plus, they have a great selection of oysters ranging for sweet, salty to briny. Other restaurants to check out while in National Harbor are Fiorella Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria, Rosa Mexicano and Succotash.

Nightlife

The Replay Lounge at Pose Rooftop at the Gaylord is a pop up 80’s experience. With instagrammable views, retro arcade games, and neon for days – Replay is a must-do. The signature cocktail menu is inspired by the best of the 80’s films, and the over-the-top milkshakes are available with or without alcohol. Of course, I had mine with.

For the gambler, the AC Hotel offers a free shuttle to the MGM National Harbor. Here you can hit the casino and enjoy slots and table games to your heart’s content. While Bobby McKey’s offers a rollicking night of entertainment with their dueling piano show. Lastly for a night cap, pop into the lobby bar back at the AC Hotel. The bartenders will craft the perfect signature cocktail to finish off the evening to make your staycation complete.
