As the Man About DC, I’m always up to showcase the hottest trends or what’s new and happening around town. I’m willing to take one for the team but to be honest when the chance to get a Manzilian was offered, I was admittedly a little leery. Women have been getting Brazilians for years but this “take it all off trend” is beginning to appeal to more and more men. I decided to see what the hype was about and take one for the team. Or should I say take it off of the team!
For those that don’t know, a “Manzilian” is a man’s Brazilian wax treatment. Also known by other names such as “brozilians” or “boyzilian”, it involves complete pubic hair removal: (pardon my language for those who are squeamish) from the front of the pubic bone to the area underneath, to the anus. When you hear the clinical definition, it sounds pretty simple enough. However, the thought of applying hot wax to my nether regions to rip off the hair can be pretty frightening. Just think about what happens when you rip a band-aid off your arm. Now imagine that happening on your private parts…. Ouch!
Still ever the trooper I made my appointment to have it done. European Wax Centers Washington locations has just begun offering the service to men. I’ve gone to them before for wax treatments however it was just for my eyebrows and nostrils. Trust me these brows can get pretty unruly! And since guys have been having other parts of their bodies waxed (chest and back) I was game to give it a try.
What are the benefits of a Manzilian
Just like women, many men go in for a Manzilian wax because they would rather have a professional do it instead of themselves. For the record, I would never do it myself! A Manzilian can make one feel cleaner, fresher as well as improve appearance and hygiene. As guys, our hair can be thicker and coarser, so it’s more prone to ingrown hairs and acne after shaving. That makes this type of wax treatment a far more superior method of hair removal. And if you’ve ever shaved down there, you know the how much it itches when it grows back! True story, I trimmed too short once and ultimately shaved it all off. That itch when the hair was growing back was a nightmare!
My experience
I wasn’t sure what I expected however I had seen the 40 Year Old Virgin so I thought I had an idea.
Still I prepared myself for the experience. In order to be waxed, hair has to be ¼ of an inch or longer. That’s about the length of a grain of rice. I hadn’t trimmed in years so my forest met the requirement. I also arrived freshly showered, free from lotions or oils, and in loose-fitting clothes. Tip: Drink plenty of water. Although the room was ice cold, I was in full sweat mode by the time it was finished.
Did it hurt? Well they say according to you threshold for pain, it may not be so bad. I suggest you refer back to the 40 Year Old Virgin clip. The waxing took about 30 minutes and for me, it was a little painful, For an idea of what I experienced, check out my Instagram reel
How did it feel afterwards?
It’s an interesting experience to not have hair in a place that’s always had hair. Don’t count my head! Now my groin is as smooth as a bowling ball although some guys leave a little landing strip. This may be an option for future waxing trips. For those Speedo ready gym bods, this is definitely a great option. No unsightly hairs poking out the sides of your suit. If I ever get Speedo ready, I’ll show you.
Now that it’s done it’s kind of a neat feeling. It’s been about two weeks and I’m still smooth. Typically in about two weeks stubble starts to appear and if you continue to want to be smooth, waxing is done every 4 to 6 weeks. For post care, I’ve been using the EWC Shea Body Polish and the Ingrown Hair Serum and I haven’t had any ingrown hairs.
To be honest, I don’t mind hair but the couple of gray hairs that were starting to spring up were a little unsettling. Some guys will never consider trimming or waxing and that’s okay. This treatment is not for them. However for those that are currently shaving or want that smooth look this is a great option.
