Day 2 of New York Fashion Week Men’s started with a behind the scenes of Feng Chen Wang. I had a chance to interview Chinese born, London based designer right before her runway show. And while she may be a petite woman, her enthusiasm and exuberance over latest collection clearly overshadowed her small frame.

For F/W 2018, Feng Chen Wang got her inspiration from what home means to her. “From when I was born I went to other cities and other countries so it became a whole journey. So what I’m looking for is what home means to me. I realized that home maybe doesn’t mean a house, a city or a place, it’s more like where’s your heart is besides and who you are with, “ said a passionate Wang.

There’s a story behind the pieces in her collection. For instance the shirt made up of many shirts. “I call it my boyfriend shirt,” she said. But to her it was much more than that. She likened it to developing relationships with people along your journey. You meet one person then another and then several others until it becomes a patchwork of relationships, similar to the many shirts that made up the garment.

Color was also important in her collection. Gold represented sunshine and to her orange is warmth and reminded her of home. Several of the garments had a faded washed orange, which symbolized the memories of home as well as comfort. Even her props had a meaning. One model carried a puffy pillow shaped telephone. It made her thing of her mom and wanting to call home.

Wang is also acutely aware of the role technology plays in clothing these days. She believes technology and design go hand in hand. “It’s good to have something innovative and new in your pieces otherwise it’s just garments,” she mused. I also asked her about the influence of street wear on the runway. She doesn’t believe there should be a classification of street wear versus any other type of wear. It’s just normal wear. The technique for design in all types of clothes is quite high.

After speaking with her then seeing the clothes walk down the runway, you could appreciate where Feng Chen Wang got her inspiration. She even showed her take on tailored looks that were a breath of fresh air. As I thought about her collection, I also thought about my style.

I feel at home in a tailored look and I derive comfort in that. In attending the week’s shows I always said, I’d wear the same types of things I’d wear home in DC. So maybe that’s what home means to me. Thanks Feng Chen Wang!
