During this year’s New York Fashion Week Mens, Lukhanyo Mdingi presented his Autumn/Winter 2019 collection. The presentation at Chelsea Piers marked the debut for the young designer who started his eponymous label in 2015. His pieces give a fresh idea of what we consider fall/winter fashion.

When it comes to winter fashion, we think of bundling up in heavy layers of thick wools and cozy cashmeres. But it’s easy to forget that in some parts of the world that temperatures are at the other end of the spectrum. Lukhanyo Mdingi is from South Africa where summer runs from December to March. His collection gave an international perspective on fall/winter clothing.

Midingi’s collection was entitled Perenial and consisted of 11 looks on both men and women. The dominant colors were golds, bronzes and off whites which are typically considered fall jewel colors. However in this setting, they seemingly appeared more as exquisite earth tones. For those diehard fall/winter fans there was still a bit of layering in the looks. Not enough to ward off a freezing artic blast but just perfect for a chilly African evening. A diversity of thought is always a good thing during Fashion Week.
