Over the past year, many of us have gotten comfortable at working from home. But as the country starts to open again, a lot of us will be required to return to the office. That means it’s time to start dressing up again and looking presentable in public. It’s time to think about what to wear as we head back to work. Consider neutral colors in relaxed styles for spring as you return to your 9 to 5.

Comfort has become the name of the game while working at home. For me, tailored suits and updated casual styles have given way to baggy sweatpants, ripped tees and in some cases, pajamas all day! Somehow, I don’t think these favored choices are appropriate back to work looks! However, returning to the office does not necessarily mean sacrificing comfort. But that doesn’t mean just looking good from the waist up for those video Zoom calls!

It’s spring and many will look to add some bright color to their attire to celebrate the excitement of the season. While that’s not a bad idea, there’s something to be said about incorporating neutral colors into the mix. Neutral colors tend to buck seasonal color trends. What might be hot one year may not be an “it” color in the future. Not only can they used from year to year, they can also serve as transitional pieces from season to season. You can get a lot of use out of neutral colors like tan, brown, beige and even off white.

Styling Tips

’m a huge fan of Theory and Vince. I think these brands are great for creating updated casual looks. I love the classic styling of both brands and many of the pieces hold up year over year in both quality and styling. Full disclosure, my sweater is by Vince and from several years ago. What’s also nice for bargain hunters about both brands is many similar styles can be found at discounted prices from stores like Saks Off 5th and Nordstrom Rack.

I paired my sweater with a casual long sleeve shirt, lightweight drawstring pants and a pair of comfortable espadrilles. All in neutral colors. The idea was to maintain that comfy at home feel but looking more appropriate for being out in public. My sweater is a little oversized but not too baggy to exaggerate my shape. The pants are a slimmer fit drawstring and the espadrilles are practically my out of the house slippers.

If this look is a little too casual for the office, swap out the drawstring pants for chinos or joggers in a fabric such as a lightweight wool. Still using those neutral colors. In the place of the espadrilles, a pair of white trainers or loafers would work just as well.

Steal My Look

Neutral colors were the key to the success of this look. However, notice the pop of color in my sunglasses. Normally, I’m more of a briefcase or tote kind of guy but sometimes you can’t go wrong with a statement backpack! Although I could be heading back to class instead of the office.

My sweater is no longer available but a zip front or crewneck will work just as well. Happy hunting!
