A great summer plaid suit

Those who know me know, know I’m a big fan of the plaid suit. Lately I have been picking bold pattern suits and I think this something that will continue in the future. In fact if you’ve been reading my blog, I’ve had a long time fascination with the plaid suit. Check out this post from 2013. So it should come as no surprise, that I found a great summer plaid suit.

I have long been a fan of Thom Browne. His take on the suit has been refreshing over the last few years we’ve seen elements of his style being adopted by other designers. One of the most noticeable trends is the use of cropped pants and shorts in his suting. If you’ve seen his 2018 Fall/Winter collection, Browne has even introduced skirts and more androgynous pieces in his looks. While some of his aesthetic is not for me, I can appreciate the boldness in his designs.

Black Fleece, his collaboration with Brooks Brothers, was one of the reasons that lured me back into the store. I was obsessed. I still have some of the those old pieces that still pop out of my closet from time to time. And while I didn’t own any of it, I also watched his collaboration with Moncler with fascination. And as with Black Fleece, that partnership has now ended.

Color me surprised when I found this suit by Zara. It was going to be the perfect summer plaid suit. Fortunately for me I picked it up at the beginning of the year. It had those Thom Browne elements that I loved: slim fit suit, bold pattern and even cropped pants. It’s a little edgier for the likes of DC but it’s been a great addition for the season.

I shot my suit at the XOXO sculpture by Laura Kimpton with Jeff Schomberg. The sculpture is one of six public installations to help showcase art outside of the Renwick Gallery. The installations are a collaborative effort organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District. They are also an extension of the gallery’s No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man which is running now through January 21, 2019. Follow the link if you would like more information and here’s a map if you’d like to do a walking tour of these outdoor installations.

How to wear it

The bold print with the crop pants is not something you’ll be seeing in boardrooms or Congressional halls but it’s a great look for more creative types. I’ve been wearing my suit to trendy evening events and would not rule it out as an option for a summer wedding.

That is great. Oh, how I missed it this summer. I am in Dubai and since the summers are harsh, I choose to equip my wardrobe with light clothing and bright colours. Should have read this before. Maybe next time.
