The days are getting shorter, the leaves are changing and the temperatures are getting cooler. To some that means that fall has arrived. For me, it also it also means it’s time for a fall wardrobe refresh!

I always like when the season change especially in the fall. And while I don’t mind the shorter days and love the color of the falling leaves, I’m not necessarily a fan of the cooler weather. However, I am a fan of the clothes that I get to wear to fend of the chillier temperatures. So, a fall wardrobe refresh is just the ticket I need to boost my spirits and get ready for the season.

But what does a fall wardrobe refresh really mean? A refresh means adding key pieces from the current season to your existing wardrobe to give what you have new life. It’s a way to create the newest on trend looks without having to buy an entire new wardrobe. The key to a successful refresh is either adding a few new statement pieces or updating some classic pieces that will can be carried over year to year.

This year in planning your fall refresh, consider updating some of your classic pieces. Need a hint on what to add or refresh? Try these three classic pieces: moleskin pants, turtleneck sweater and a bomber jacket.

Moleskin pants

Moleskin is a densely woven cotton fabric that as a brushed service and has the appearance of that of suede. But no, it’s not made from actual animals. The thicker fabric gives a more elevated look when compared to either its jeans or chino counterparts. It’s also an excellent material to consider as days get chillier.

Turtleneck sweater

The turtleneck has been around since the 1500’s but it wasn’t until the 40s and the 50s that it started to take on the prominence it’s held through today. It’s now a must have essential fall item to have in your arsenal. Worn either slim in thin material such as silk, cotton or wool or even as a chunkier version. For a refresh, consider a solid-colored medium weight sweater in black, gray, navy, burgundy or cream.

Bomber jacket

The bomber jacket was originally created during WW1. Also known as a flight jacket it was designed to keep pilots warm in uninsulated and unheated cockpits. Now it’s not just pilots who don this short jacket for its warmth but also for its fashion and style. Popular styles are both seen with collar and collarless options. Try the suede version with a shearling collar. This will carry you through fall and well into winter as well.

Shop my look

The key to a successful fall wardrobe refresh is adding items that will work with pieces currently in your closet. What’s an added bonus is if the newer pieces also work well together. The idea is to create options for a variety of different looks.

I put this look together for an upcoming Saturday afternoon tailgate. I’ll be attending my college homecoming in a couple of weeks. And while a collegiate sweater and jeans is a good go to look, I wanted something a little more elevated. I haven’t seen some of the people in years so I’d like to make a statement!
